"Can You Hear Me Now?" Learning To Hear The Voice Of God

Updated: Aug 25
Opening Question
If you were stranded somewhere with no GPS, no map, and no data — and someone offered to guide you home purely by voice over a radio, what would be the hardest part about trusting that voice? What would make you more or less likely to follow their instructions?
General Observation
In the sermon, Minister Randy talked about deception and distraction as two of the enemy's most powerful tools. Which one of those two stood out to you more, and why?
Minister Randy made this statement: "Anything that pulls you from the will of the Father is a distraction." What's your reaction to that definition? Does it feel too broad, or does it feel accurate?
He said the church has largely been operating off of "muscle memory" — going through the motions without real results. What do you think he meant by that, and do you think that's a fair observation?
Understanding the Message
In 1 Samuel 3:1-10, the young boy Samuel kept hearing a voice but didn't recognize it as God. The Bible says "Samuel did not yet know the Lord, nor was the word of the Lord yet revealed to him" (1 Samuel 3:7). What does this tell us about the connection between knowing God and being able to hear God?
In John 10:27, Jesus says, "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me." Minister Randy pointed out that Jesus didn't say "my pastors" or "my apostles" — he said "my sheep." What does that tell us about who is responsible for maintaining a hearing relationship with God?
Minister Randy described sheep as animals that are not known for their intellect, but for their ability to follow. He said, "A sheep doesn't survive off intellect. It survives by following." Why do you think God compares us to sheep rather than to something stronger or smarter?
Minister Randy drew a distinction between being saved and God actually knowing you. He referenced the passage where Jesus says, "Depart from me, I never knew you" (Matthew 7:23). What's the difference between knowing about God and God actually knowing you? How does a person move from one to the other?
Personal Application
Minister Randy listed several common distractions — money, career, politics, fitness, racism, friends, and even family. Which of those hit closest to home for you personally? Is there something in your life right now that may be pulling your attention away from what God is calling you to?
Minister Randy said, "The more you ignore the voice of God, the harder it becomes to hear." Have you ever experienced a season where you felt like you couldn't hear God clearly? Looking back, what do you think contributed to that?
Minister Randy challenged the idea of wanting "revelation without accountability" and "anointing without submission." He said that feeding the flesh long enough makes the flesh louder than God. How does your daily routine either sharpen or dull your spiritual sensitivity?
Minister Randy said some of us don't have a hearing problem — we have an obedience problem. Is there something you already know God has been speaking to you about that you've been putting off or ignoring? What's holding you back from taking that step?
Minister Randy described discernment as the ability to recognize what is and isn't from God — even when something looks or sounds right on the surface. How developed do you feel your sense of spiritual discernment is right now? What do you think it would take to sharpen it?
Action Steps
This week, choose at least one of the following to put into practice:
Identify your distraction. Write down the one thing that most consistently pulls your attention away from God. Pray specifically about that area and ask God to help you reorder your priorities.
Spend intentional time listening. Set aside 10-15 minutes each day this week — not just to talk to God, but to be still and listen. Keep a journal nearby to write down any impressions, scriptures, or thoughts that come to mind.
Practice obedience in one area. If you already know there's something God has been asking you to do or stop doing, take one concrete step toward obedience this week. Don't wait until you feel completely ready.
Evaluate your spiritual diet. Take an honest look at what voices you're consistently feeding yourself — social media, news, certain relationships, entertainment. Ask yourself: are these voices making it easier or harder to hear God?
